Browsing MedDRA Dictionary

MedDRA browser allows you to interactively select a MedDRA term which best matches the verbatim to suit your search. It suggests most likely matches to choose from the list.

All the MedDRA look-ups in ARISg invoke the MedDRA browser.

Searching a Verbatim Text on MedDRA Browser

The contents of the verbatim text are analyzed and it is attempted to match this to a possible term within the MedDRA thesaurus currently selected.

On completion of the search operation, the search results are displayed in Search Dictionary Terms pane on the left. The  MedDRA Heirarchy pane on the right displays the selected MedDRA terms from the  results displayed in the Search Dictionary Terms pane in a tree view structure, and the tree view is Collapse All/Expand All only at the SOC level.

Features of MedDRA Browser

You can analyze the MedDRA terms and its corresponding relationship between LLT/PT/HLGT/HLT/SOC terms. MedDRA browser helps you to:

You can also view the selected long MedDRA term in the Selected Hierarchy pane in the  right  bottom of the screen. The selected MedDRA term is displayed, the terms are represented by the color code icon, with the respective term label embedded in the icon.

Multiple MedDRA terms are displayed in the MedDRA Hierarchy pane and the selected MedDRA term is displayed in the Selected Hierarchy pane.  If there is no selection, then the label is also not displayed.

Browsing Procedures

  1. Click MedDRA look-ups in ARISg MedDRA browser appears.

  2. In MedDRA Browser, enter the verbatim text term and performs a search against the selected MedDRA Thesaurus.

  3. All possible matches are displayed as per the search criteria.

Working with MedDRA Browser

  1. Select Dictionary àMedDRA Dictionary from the menu bar MedDRA browser appears.

Note: By default, in the Level drop-down the lowest level term (LLT) is displayed. You can search for a lowest level term by using an appropriate LLT term available in the MedDRA dictionary.

Types of Term Level

The available Term Level's are as follows

Performing Search in MedDRA Browser 

1.      Select the particular term (LLT/PT/HLT/HLGT/SOC term) in the Level drop-down field  and enter the search critera for the particular term  and click the Search button. All the terms matching the selection criteria are listed in the Searched Dictionary Terms section..

For example: If you seslect LLT in the Level drop-down and enter the term 'abnormal’ in   search term , and click search all the terms beginning with 'abnormal’ is displayed in the Searched Dictionary Terms section.

NOTE: Type a wild card character (%) in search term to search and view the respective MedDRA terms in the list. The MedDRA browser displays all the relevant terms in the Searched Dictionary Terms Section.

For example: Selecting LLT in Level and entering 'accident' in the  search term lists all the words beginning with 'accident’ depending on the selected condition.

2.      If you double click any term listed in the LLT list box, the corresponding PT, HLT, HLGT and SOC terms are listed in the MedDRA Hierarchy section. You can view the same as tree.

  If you search for a PT term and double click any particular listed term, the corresponding LLT, and HLTs, HLGTs and SOCs are listed.

  One LLT term can be associated with multiple SOC terms.

  By default, the primary SOC term is selected.

  The primary SOC term is always prefixed with an asterisk (*) and Non-Current LLT Term is always prefixed with #.

3.       If you double click any item listed in the MedDRA Hierarchy section, the corresponding PT, HLT, HLGT and SOC terms are moved to Selected Hierarchy section in tree structure.

Storing the MedDRA Coding Types

ARISg provides a feature to reduce the effort required to identify records which are coded incorrectly.

  1. The letter "E” is stored in the Coding type, when a reported term exactly matches the term in the MedDRA dictionary.

  2. The letter "S” is stored in the Coding type, when a reported term has a confirmed match in the Synonym List.

  3. The letter "M” is stored, when the reported term does not match the MedDRA dictionary or the Synonym list.

Note: If the reported term has no match, this could have been manually coded or provided by the enhanced MedDRA Browser, browsing through the lookup for different level term.
